Anti-slave-trade treaties signed by Bell and Akwa
Under British pressure, King Bell signed on 10 June 1840 and King Akwa on 7 May 1841 treaties renouncing the slave trade, among the first of their kind on the Cameroonian coast. For the Duala city-states, these agreements marked the start of a shift in their trade toward palm oil and ivory.
