Death of Ruben Um Nyobè, secretary-general of the UPC

Ruben Um Nyobè, secretary-general of the UPC since 1948, was killed by the French army on 13 September 1958 near his native village of Boumnyebel, in the Bassa region. His death marked a turning point: the armed struggle declined rapidly in Bassa country but continued in the Bamileke region.
