The Germano-Duala protection treaty and the proclamation of Kamerun
Sent by Chancellor Bismarck, the explorer and physician Gustav Nachtigal had the Duala kings Bell and Akwa, and other notables, sign a treaty on 12 July 1884 placing their territories under German protection. The German flag was raised in Douala on 14 July, and the Kamerun protectorate was proclaimed on 19 July 1884.

Historical significance
According to historians, this treaty, negotiated between parties with very unequal means of pressure, served as the legal foundation for the whole of the future German colonial territory.
