Railway construction and forced labour

To connect the port of Douala with the interior, the German administration had two railway lines built, the Nordbahn toward Nkongsamba and the Mittellandbahn toward Yaoundé, begun in 1911. These works, like those of the plantations, relied heavily on forced labour, whose mortality among recruits was high.
