Geography
Relief and rivers
The East is the country's largest region, close to 110,000 km² of low plateaus (400 to 800 m) under dense forest. The Dja, Kadey, Boumba and Ngoko drain the south towards the Congo basin, while the Lom joins the Sanaga.
Climate and natural environments
The climate is equatorial, hot and humid all year. The Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Lobéké, Boumba-Bek and Nki national parks (Sangha Tri-National) make it Cameroon's leading conservation region.
Borders and hazards
The region borders the Central African Republic and Congo. Gold at Bétaré-Oya and iron at Mbalam are its main mineral resources; seasonal floods and deforestation linked to logging and mining are the main hazards.
