Geography
Relief and rivers
The Far North is a region of Sahelian plains bounded to the west by the Mandara Mountains (up to nearly 1,500 m, with the Rhumsiki peaks) and to the east by the Logone and Chari rivers, which flow into Lake Chad. Seasonal watercourses (mayos) and the Yaérés floodplain set the rhythm of rural life.
Climate and natural environments
The Sudano-Sahelian climate concentrates rain between June and September. Waza National Park, a Ramsar site, and Kalamaloué National Park protect the wildlife of the plain.
Borders and hazards
The region borders Nigeria and Chad. Logone floods, drought and the historical shrinking of Lake Chad are the main natural hazards.
