Geography
Relief and rivers
The West occupies the Bamileke plateau, 1,400 m high on average, crowned by the Bamboutos Mountains (2,740 m). The Noun crosses it and feeds the Bamendjing reservoir; crater lakes (Baleng, Petponoun) and the Métché falls are among its sites.
Climate and natural environments
Fertile volcanic soils and a cool, rainy highland tropical climate explain the high population density and intensive farming.
Borders and hazards
The region has no international border. Landslides on built-up slopes, such as the Gouache landslide in Bafoussam in 2019, and erosion are the main hazards.
