Major National Dialogue and the 2019 special status

On 10 September 2019, President Paul Biya announced a "Major National Dialogue" on the Anglophone crisis, to be held within the framework of the Constitution. Following the dialogue, the law of 24 December 2019 granted the North-West and South-West regions a special status, with a bicameral regional assembly including a house of traditional chiefs. The main separatist groups, demanding the prior release of political prisoners and withdrawal of the army, boycotted the dialogue.
