Transition to so-called "legitimate" commerce
Between roughly 1830 and 1860, under the effect of British pressure against the slave trade and the treaties signed by the Duala kings, trade on the Cameroonian coast gradually shifted from the slave trade toward palm oil, palm kernels and ivory, exported by the same coastal city-states to European trading houses.
