Ahmadou Ahidjo’s resignation and Paul Biya’s inauguration
President Ahmadou Ahidjo resigned on 4 November 1982, citing health reasons. In accordance with the Constitution, Prime Minister Paul Biya succeeded him and was sworn in as President of the Republic on 6 November 1982, opening the period his supporters would call the "Renouveau" (renewal).

Relations between the two men deteriorated rapidly; Ahidjo, who had remained chairman of the single party, also resigned that position in August 1983 and went into exile.
