Decline of the Sao and the rise of the Kotoko kingdoms
The Sao city-states, present since antiquity around Lake Chad and which left more than 350 archaeological sites across Cameroon and Chad, declined from the fifteenth century onward. The Kotoko kingdoms, which claim Sao descent, succeeded them in the Cameroonian Chad basin, federating city-states such as Logone-Birni, Kousséri and Makari.

Historical significance
According to UNESCO, several groups of northern Cameroon and southern Chad, notably the Kotoko, today trace their heritage to the Sao.
